V knihovně

В библиотеке

Ach, žluté svazky po stěnách

v knihovně večer v tiché chvíli,

myšlenky a ten šedý prach

jak narkosa mne omámily.

Dál nelze čisti.... Divná věc —

či přelud práci přerušil mi?
V procesu dávném «Gilles de Retz»

květ leží s lístky sežloutlými.

Je protkán sítí bledých žil,

ač suchý, přece v knize voní.
To milenec as položil
před časem tenhle kvítek do ní.

Na tváři ještě stopy měl

rtů rudých, jež jak oheň plály,

však výraz očí otupěl,

že krůtě chladnými se zdály.

A jistě vášeň ďábelská

se v jeho duši probudila,

a kvítek — dárek lásky snad —

do knihy hříchu založila.

A pak, ve stínu sloupoví,

v té noci, plné divné krásy,
či výkřik slyšel vábivý,
a koho uviděl tam asi?

Ach, kolik v lásce tajemství,

jak mučí hrobka ztrouchnivělá!
A tady v knize, zdá se mi,

krev mnohou stránku potřísnila.

Trn všude růže provází,

života břímě brzy znaví.
Však co je po tom čtenáři!
Ten — jako čas — se nezastaví.

Mé sny jsou čisty — kdos však ty,

ty, vrahu, tolik záhadný mi?
O, chagrinové hřbety knih,

ó, svazky s listy sežloutiými!
