Stance

На острове

Ach, jaká mha ten ostrov zahalila

a skály se všech stran!
Zde Apokalypsis napsána byla,

        zde umřel Pan.

Však jinde ostrov s palmovými háji,

        rozkvetlý sad,
veselé písně ženců se tu rozléhají

a zvonce stád.

Já staré housle, vyklenuté divně,

        do rukou vzal
a sotva dýchaje, jich duši v zvuky proměněné

        jsem naslouchal.

Ach, ano! Osud pokořil mne mocí

        svých kouzel všech,
to hvězdný déšť nad mojí hlavou v noci

        i zvuk a vzdech.

Jsem volný, věřím v náhod na tisíce,

        můj domov — svět.
Děvušce líbám rozpálené líce,
        dychtivý ret.

Jen na chvilku tam od Vás do mé říše

        most spuštěn jest.
Jej ihned spálí meče, kříže, číše

ohromných hvězd.

Childhood

As a child, I liked big, / Honey-scented meadows, / Groves, dry grass, / And in the grass, bovine horns. / / Every wayside shrub shouted / To me: "I’m playing with you, / Pass me by carefully / And you shall know who I am!" / / Only the savage autumn wind, / Howling, wo...

African Night

Midnight descended, impenetrable darkness, / Only the river glistens from the moon, / And across the river, an unknown tribe, / Lighting its fires, makes noise. / / Tomorrow we shall meet and find out / Who is to become the ruler of these parts; / They are helped by a black stone, / ...

Giraffe

Your eyes look at me with especial sadness today, / Your arms give the knees an especially fragile embrace. / Now listen, along Lake Chad’s shore, far away, / An exquisite giraffe makes its pace. / / He’s gracefully slender, with heavenly joy he is blessed, / His skin is ado...

Memory

Only serpents ever shed their skin, / To give their souls enough time to grow old. / We, alas, are not like snakes within: / It's not our body changing, but our soul. / / Mem’ry, with your giantess’ hand, / Drag me through this life as by a halter, / Telling tales about th...

Andrei Rublev

It is my firm and sweet conviction, / Directed by monastic art, / This woman’s face is heaven’s depiction / To Promised One by Maker’s heart. / / Her nose, like tree trunk, tall and slender, / Unfurls the arches of her brows / Above expression stern yet tender, / L...

The Porcelain Pavilion

At heart of artificial lake arose / A porcelain folly - lone pavilion’s form. / And arching, like a springing tiger’s spine, / To it a bridge of jasper reached. / / And there in this pavilion idly sat / A group of friends, who were quite brightly dressed, / And drinking fr...
