Háború

Война

Mint a kutya, súlyos láncát tépve,
Az erdõn túl géppuska ugat,
Srapnelek zümmögnek, mint a méhek,
Mind pirosló méz után kutat.

És a «hurrá» messzirõl — akárha
Aratódal zeng a réteken.
Vélheted: falvakra béke száll ma
Istenáldott, csöndes estelen.

És valóban háborúnk sugárzó
S szent ügy Istenünk szine elõtt.
Állnak szárnyas, tündöklõ szeráfok
A harcosok sorfala mögött.

Munkásaid, akik áthaladnak
A mezõkön, vértõl mocskosan,
Kik hõstettet vetnek és aratnak
Dicsõséget, õket áldd, Uram!

Mint muzsik, ki a faekére görnyed,
Mint ki búsul s hozzád esdekel,
Szívük éppúgy lángol most elõtted,
Égõ gyertyaként olvadva el.

De, Uram, erõt s a gyõzedelmes
És királyi órát annak add,
Aki a leverthez így szól: «Kedves,
Jöjj, fogadd testvéri csókomat!»

Thoughts

They have crowded around me - why? - like thieves / in the dark, in the quiet suburban dark. / Like sinister hawks, like sullen hawks, / they have come for some cruel vengeance. / / Hope left. Dream ran. / Anxiety pried open my eyes / and as though on a ghostly slate / I read my wor...

A Ballad

Lucifer my friend gave me five horses / and one gold ruby ring, / for me to go down, down into the ground, / for me to see the sky's young face. / / My horses beat their hooves, snorted, begged / to gallop like birds all over the earth, / and I believed the sun's light burned for me, ...

The Turkey

In the morning of my unsure memory / I recall a many-coloured meadow, / where ruled a haughty / turkey, adored by me. / / He was malicious and free, / his beak crimson as fire / and he was sharply scornful / of my four years. / / Neither chocolate, nor caramels, / nor pineapp...

The palm groves and the aloe thickets…

The palm groves and the aloe thickets, / a silvery, matt stream, / the sky is infinitely blue, / the sky is gold from rays. / / What more do you want, heart? / Is happiness a fable or a lie? / Why do you give yourself up submissively / to another faith temptations? / / Do you w...

The Giraffe

O, the look in your eyes this morning is more than usually sad, / With your little arms wrapped round your knees and body bent in half. / Let me tell you a story: far, far away, on the distant shores of Lake Chad, / There roams a most majestic giraffe / / Blessed with a handsome build and...

A Ballad

My friend, Lucifer gave five horses to me, / And a radiant ruby-stone beautiful ring, / So that I could go down to marvelous caves, / And could see there heaven's celestial face. / / Snorted horses, and zealous, they hoofed, and they begged / To race over and over the space of the earth...
