Дочуо једном Абисинац бедни,
Како далеко на северу, у каиру
Плешу занзибарске девојке
И љубав за новац продају.

Њему одавно беху досадиле
Габеша жене претиле,
Лукаве и зле Сомалијке
И нечисте Каффине поданице.

И запути се Абисинац бедни
На својој јединој мули
Кроз планине, шуме и степе
Далеко, далеко на север.

Нападоше га разбојници,
Четворицу је убио и сакри се,
А у густим шумама Сенаара
Слон-отшелник прегази његову мулу

Двадесет пута обнављао се месец,
Пре но што стиже он до Каира
И сети се, да нема новца,
И запути се истим путем назад.
