Rain
Through window-panes spattered with rain,
The world seems blotched to me.
But as I look, nothing in it has faded,
Nothing has become alien.
Only the greenery has become a bit more ominous,
Like a splash of vitriol,
But thanks to this, the round bush of blood-red roses
Stands out more sharply.
The splashing of drops in puddles is more deliberate now
And they murmur their psalm
Like nuns at the evening hour,
In a rapid little voice.
Glory, glory to the black-clouded sky!
It’s like a river in springtime, where
Instead of fish, the trunks of mountain trees
Toss in the turbid waters.
In the foul sloughs of enchanted millponds
Is heard the neighing of frenzied horses.
And the soul, that most hapless of captives,
Finds relief and respite here.
