Ice Floes and the River Neva

Transparent spring green
was sprouting on the islands —
but no, the Neva’s fickle,
and turns gloomy in a flash.

On the bridge: look.
Ice floes jumping, green
like copper poison,
rustling, as terrible as snakes.

Our dreams sweat, and labor; a geographer’s
dreams must press hard on him, now,
the agonized outlines
of unknown continents —

Like hidden vaults
where the corpse is buried and the toads crawl,
cellars smelling of damp mushrooms,
uncertain, faint.

The river’s sick, it’s mad.
Only the polar bears in our zoo
are happy, sure
they’ll win,

Knowing their cages are a painful
fiction, a lie, knowing
the Arctic Ocean is coming
to free them, the ocean itself.

The tip of willow tree was blackened, / For rooks protruded from its crown, / In azure sky-dale there they slackened - / The sheepish clouds grazed on its down. / And you, with gaze of resignation, / Announced: "I am in love with you." / Like sea was grass’s oscillation, / At one...

How thick, how wingless an evening! / A sunset like a cracked melon. / / You almost want to shove / those limp clouds along. / / Slow evenings like this, / coachmen whip their horses to a gallop, / / Fishermen tear at the waves with their oars, / woodsmen chop like mad / / ...
