How quiet Nature has gone!
All eyes, all ears.
Our spirit leans, leans
toward that final, awful freedom.

And earth will forget how soldiers
hurt her, how merchants sinned,
and Druids will teach on green hills
as once, once before they taught.

And poets will lead hearts on high,
as once, once before,
as angels point shooting stars
toward unseen targets.

And I will cry, “Where are you, woman
born of fire?
My eyes are unchanged,
my song is unchanged,

“I remain your beauty’s servant,
my power is still your power,
and real happiness, final
happiness, is still: you!”
