Браво, браво на консула: вече
трети ден продължават игрите.
И докарват все по-страховити
зверове, уловени далече.

Тежки слонове, мечки космати,
гладни тигри, пияни от кърви;
тур такъв, че ни казаха: първи
е по бой и размах на рогата.

Най-накрая пред тях бе изкаран
алеманският вожд — вече в рани.
Той бил зъл заклинател — така ни
бе съобщен, — и убиец коварен.

О, как чакахме номера сетен!
Той бе смел — значи, ще се побори.
Я, зверища, скочете отгоре!
Я хапете, дерете, мушете!

Ала той, вместо с меча да кълца,
изведнъж взе да вие спокойно.
Зареваха след него нестройно
всички тигри, и мечки, и вълци.

Коленичиха слонове горди,
запълзяха грамадни питони,
като гъвкави, дълги колони,
сякаш искаха той да ги води.

О, към консула и боговете
дружно викахме: чудо страхотно! —
щом и тигърът — страшно животно,
кротко взе да му ближе нозете!
