The Giraffe

Жираф

Today, I see, your gaze is particularly forlorn,
And your hands particularly thin, embracing your knees.
Listen: far away, far away, on Lake Chad,
A refined giraffe is roaming.

His proportions are harmonious and his legs are long,
And a bewitching pattern adorns his skin;
Nothing dares compare with it, save the moon,
Fragmented and flowing on the liquid of broad lakes.

He juts out like the many-colored sails of ships,
And his gait is floating, like joyous birdflight.
I know this earth has seen many wonders
When at sunset he hides in a marble grotto.

I know the happy stories of secret lands,
About the dark maiden, about the passion of the young chief,
But you have breathed in the heavy mists for too long —
You will believe in nothing, except rain.

And how I would tell you about tropical orchards,
About elegant palms, about the scent of extraordinary grasses…
You're crying? Listen… far away, on Lake Chad,
A refined giraffe is roaming.

Death

Fragile, pallid, dressed in ashen vesture, / You appeared with kindness in your eyes. / Quite unlike your previous meeting’s gesture - / Howling trump and slashing rapier’s cries. / / Overcome with gold’s intoxication, / Bared you thus your scintillating breast. / T...

To river's edge they made their way / To see the sunset glowing stronger. / But now their hair was growing grey, / Their wingless hearts could fly no longer. / The endless years had passed them by, / Those years of grief and desolation, / When neither scarlet evening sky / Nor starry n...

The Giraffe

Today I can tell that your gaze is especially sad / And your arms are especially thin as they clasp round your knee. / Listen, I’ll tell you how far, far away, on the shores of Lake Chad, / An exquisite giraffe wanders free. / / He has been created so languid and graceful and slim /...

Modernity

I shut Homer and sat by the bay window glass. / On my lips the last word of the Iliad fluttered. / The night watchman’s long shadow unhurriedly passed, / And above something - lamplight or moonlight - bright sputtered. / / So, so often I’d throw down challenging looks / And ...

My dear boy, you are so happy, ever merry, bright and smiling, / Do not ask for this sweet fortune that has poisoned worlds away. / You don’t know, you don’t know, you don’t know what is this violin, / What dark horrors lie in store for one who dares begin to play! / / I...

There are some prophets still among us, / Although the altars now are gone. / Their eyes are deep and they are lustrous / With flaming future of the dawn. / / But victor’s call is alienating, / Unfathomed words on them bear down, / They’re pale, and find intimidating / O...
