Where solemn candles lighted
A Madonna high enshrined,
His heart and hand he plighted
To the woman of constant mind.

But his vow no more recalling,
And his kisses at random given,
A sword cut short his brawling,
And he stood at the gate of heaven.

‘My shrine you have surely slighted,’
Madonna’s voice rejoined,
‘For there your faith was plighted
To the woman of constant mind.

‘Begone! The Lord of Heaven
Gathers not crops like yours;
Whose vows are falsely given,
He passes not these doors.’

But sad and stubborn to her
In reverence he inclined,
And answered: ‘I never knew her,
This woman of constant mind.’

Ночью был зарезан в драке
И пришел к преддверьям рая.

«Ты ль в Моем не клялся храме, —
Прозвучала речь Мадонны, —
Что ты будешь верен даме,
Той, чьи взоры непреклонны?

Отойди, не эти жатвы
Собирает Царь Небесный.
Кто нарушил слово клятвы,
Гибнет, Богу неизвестный».

Но, печальный и упрямый,
Он припал к ногам Мадонны:
«Я нигде не встретил дамы,
Той, чьи взоры непреклонны».
