The Gates of Paradise

Ворота рая

The eternal entrance into God's paradise is not closed with seven diamond seals; it has no brilliance nor enticing charms, and the people do not know it.

It's a doorway in a wall abandoned long ago — stones, moss, and nothing more; near by there is a beggar, like an unbidden guest, with keys hanging at his waist.

Knights and men-at-arms ride by to the blare of trumpets and the clatter of silver; and no one spares a glance for the gate-keeper, the glorious Apostle Peter.

They are all dreaming: «There, beside God's Sepulchre, the doors of paradise will open for us; on Mount Thabor, at its foot, the promised hour will strike.»

So the slow-moving monster goes by; the wailing sound of the horn rings out clearly; and the Apostle Peter in his tattered rags, pale and poor, looks like a beggar.
